Released in 2008 by the Hop Breeding Company of Yakima, Washington, Citra took the craft beer world by storm and overtook Cascade in 2018 as America’s most-grown hop. Its complex pedigree — Hallertau Mittelfrüh, US Tettnanger, Brewer’s Gold and East Kent Golding — produces one of the most intensely fruit-forward profiles of any hop: grapefruit, lime and orange over a wave of tropical mango, passionfruit and lychee, with subtle hints of gooseberry and pine. With very high total oil (over 2%, roughly twice that of Cascade) and moderate cohumulone, Citra is technically dual-purpose but most brewers reserve it for late additions where its aromatics truly shine. It’s the hop behind countless flagship IPAs and hazy pale ales worldwide.
